Vintage Layered Papers

Wildflower Lesson #8:

Your story was never meant to fit on a single page.

There is something about old paper that makes me want to stop and look a little closer.

A faded book page.

Someone's beautiful old handwriting.

A piece of music.

A torn edge.

A stain from who-knows-how-many years ago.

A scrap of paper that most people might throw away, yet somehow, when it's placed beside another little piece, it becomes beautiful again.

That is exactly what we're exploring in this week's Wildflower Lesson #8 — Vintage Layered Papers.

But like so many of our Wildflower Lessons, this isn't really just about paper.

Because while we're tearing, gathering and layering, there is another lesson quietly waiting for us.

We are layered too.

We don't have to erase the old to create something new

I think sometimes we believe becoming a new version of ourselves means leaving everything else behind.

We want a fresh page.

A clean beginning.

No mistakes showing through.

But nature doesn't work like that.

Look closely at an old tree and you'll see the seasons written into its bark.

Look at the garden and you'll find last season's leaves becoming nourishment for this season's growth.

Look at a wildflower field and you'll find new blooms growing amongst dried stems, fallen petals and seeds from what came before.

Nothing is wasted.

And perhaps our lives are the same.

The woman you were ten years ago is still part of you.

So is the woman who made mistakes.

The woman who changed her mind.

The woman who started something and didn't finish it.

The woman who dreamed differently.

The woman who went through a season she thought might break her.

And the woman who laughed until her tummy hurt and wondered how life could possibly get any better.

They're all there.

Layer upon layer upon layer.

You don't have to tear out the old pages to write the next chapter.

You simply keep creating.

The Technique: Vintage Layered Papers

This is such a simple technique, which is exactly why I love it.

There really isn't a right or wrong way to do it.

The idea is to gather papers with different colours, textures, ages and stories and begin layering them together.

You might use:

  • Old book pages

  • Sheet music

  • Tea or coffee-stained papers

  • Handwritten notes

  • Vintage-style scrapbook papers

  • Tickets and receipts

  • Botanical illustrations

  • Old envelopes

  • Tissue paper

  • Maps

  • Lace or fabric

  • Stamps

  • Labels

  • Little pieces of ephemera

You don't need to buy anything special.

In fact, before you do, have a wander around your home.

Look through old books destined for recycling.

Check drawers.

Open that box of papers you've been keeping because they were "too pretty to throw away."

Your materials don't have to match.

That's part of the magic.

How to Create Vintage Layered Papers

Step 1 — Gather

Collect a handful of papers that catch your eye.

Don't overthink whether they belong together.

Choose different weights, colours, textures and patterns.

This is play.

Step 2 — Tear

Now tear some of your papers by hand.

Leave the wonky edges.

Let some pieces be tiny and others much larger.

You can even crinkle them, fold them or rough up the edges.

We're not looking for perfect rectangles.

We're creating character.

Step 3 — Layer

Place one piece over another.

Then another.

Let some edges disappear while others peek through.

Move things around.

Take something away.

Put it back again.

There is no formula you need to follow.

Keep going until something in you says:

There.

Step 4 — Add texture

This is where you can really make the piece yours.

Try adding:

🌿 lace

🌿 stitching 🌿 a botanical stamp

🌿 pressed flowers

🌿 handwriting

🌿 coffee rings

🌿 splattered tea

🌿 ink

🌿 washi

🌿 little labels or tickets

And suddenly you may notice something wonderful happening…

Your previous Wildflower Lessons begin finding their way into this one.

That is intentional.

We're not learning isolated techniques and forgetting them.

We're building a creative language.

Each new technique becomes another tool you can reach for whenever you're creating.

Step 5 — Let the layers tell the story

You don't have to cover every space.

You don't have to keep adding until the page is full.

Sometimes the quietest little piece becomes the thing that holds the whole page together.

Stop when it feels right.

Then look at what you've made.

Pieces that seemed completely unrelated now belong together.

And isn't that rather beautiful?

Why Layering Matters

Layering gives our journals depth.

Instead of seeing one flat piece of paper, our eyes begin travelling around the page.

We notice what's underneath.

We wonder what's hidden.

We look closer.

And I think that's why I love this technique so much.

Because people are like that too.

There is always more beneath the surface.

A person can look completely put together while carrying a difficult season underneath.

Someone can appear quiet while holding enormous dreams.

A woman can be starting again at 40, 50, 60 or 70 while carrying decades of wisdom with her.

We are never just the layer people see first.

Your Soul Inquiry

Once you've created your layered page, don't rush to close your journal.

Give yourself another few quiet minutes.

Look at the different pieces you've used and ask:

What layers of my life have shaped the woman I am today?

Is there a past version of myself I've been trying to leave behind rather than honour?

What have my difficult seasons taught me?

Which parts of myself am I ready to bring forward into this next season?

What new layer am I creating right now?

You don't need beautiful answers.

Write whatever comes.

One sentence is enough.

One word is enough.

This isn't about filling pages.

It's about listening.

Your Wildflower Journey This Week

LEARN

Explore Wildflower Lesson #8 — Vintage Layered Papers.

CREATE

Gather a handful of papers and experiment with tearing, layering and texture.

COLLECT

Add Technique #8 to your Wildflower Lesson Library so you can return to it whenever you need inspiration.

REFLECT

Spend a few minutes with this week's Soul Inquiry:

What new layer am I creating in my life right now?

SHARE

If you feel comfortable, share your page and let someone else see what you've created.

You never know who you might give permission to begin creating too.

BLOOM

Come back next week and we'll add another technique to our growing Wildflower collection.

Find Your 15

And if you're reading all of this thinking:

"That looks beautiful, but I don't have time…"

I'm going to lovingly challenge that.

Don't wait for an entire free afternoon.

Don't wait until your craft room is organised.

Don't wait until you have the perfect supplies.

Find 15 minutes.

Make yourself a coffee.

Gather five scraps of paper.

Open your journal.

Put your phone away.

And play.

Your fifteen minutes doesn't need to produce something worthy of framing.

It just needs to give you a little space to come home to yourself.

Because creativity isn't another thing you have to be good at.

It can simply be somewhere you go to breathe.

One final thought…

Maybe your life was never supposed to look like one perfectly clean sheet of paper.

Maybe it's meant to look more like this week's journal page.

A little worn around the edges.

Some pieces you'd forgotten about.

Some beautiful memories.

Some messy bits.

A few things you would probably do differently.

And new pieces being added all the time.

Together, they make something that could never have existed without every layer that came before.

Don't erase your layers.

Honour them.

Then keep creating the next one.

Your invitation: Save Wildflower Lesson #8 to your Wildflower Lesson Library, find your 15 this week and create one beautifully imperfect Vintage Layered Papers page of your own.

Create from your heart. Inquire with your soul. Bloom wildly.
