When the Horses Came Closer

horses, reiki and sound healing

The Unexpected Moment That Changed Everything for Me

I didn’t set out to combine horses, Reiki, and sound healing together.

At the time, they felt like two separate paths growing beside each other like wildflowers in different corners of the same garden.

One path was my study into equine-assisted learning — understanding horse-human communication, nervous system regulation, presence, and connection.

The other was Reiki, energy healing, meditation, crystals, and sound.

Both felt important.

Both felt healing.

But I hadn’t yet realised they were quietly leading me to the same place.

It happened on an ordinary afternoon.

The kind of afternoon where the golden light softens everything and the wind moves gently through the grass.

The horses were nearby, grazing quietly while we were experimenting with the Reiki table out in the paddock.

No pressure.

No structure.

No expectations.

Just curiosity.

The bowls were sitting nearby.

The air felt still.

The horses wandered in and out as they pleased.

And then something shifted.

As the Reiki session unfolded, the horses began coming closer.

Not because we called them.

Not because we asked them to perform.

They simply moved toward the energy.

Calmly. Naturally. Softly.

It was almost as if they could feel the nervous system beginning to settle before we even could ourselves.

I remember looking around and feeling this overwhelming sense of peace move through the space.

The kind of peace that doesn’t arrive through thinking. It arrives through feeling.

Afterward, I walked over and sat beneath a tree.

The grass was warm beneath me.

The late afternoon light danced through the branches overhead.

And Holly wandered over.

No halter.

No lead rope.

No task.

Just connection.

She quietly grazed around me while we chatted.

Then slowly, gently, she came closer.

She sniffed my foot first.

Then my knee.

Then my hip.

Then my shoulder.

And she stayed.

Not demanding anything.

Not expecting anything.

Just present.

It’s hard to explain what happened next because it didn’t feel dramatic on the outside — but inside me, something profound shifted.

For the first time in years, the anxiety and stress I had been carrying seemed to dissolve. Not disappear because I “fixed” it.

Not because I forced positive thinking.

Not because someone gave me a strategy or a worksheet.

It simply… softened.

As though my nervous system had finally been given permission to exhale.

And I remember thinking afterward:

What just happened?

Was it the Reiki calming my body into a parasympathetic state?

Was it the horses responding differently because my energy had changed?

Was it the feeling of complete safety and non-judgment in that moment?

Maybe it was all of it.

What I do know is this: horses don’t respond to who we pretend to be.

They respond to energy.

To presence.

To nervous systems.

To authenticity.

And the more I explored this work, the more I realised something important.

It wasn’t the structured activities creating the transformation.

It was the connection itself.

So often in traditional equine programs, the focus becomes:

Lead the horse.

Complete the obstacle.

Do the exercise correctly.

But what if healing begins before any of that?

What if the real medicine is simply learning to feel safe enough to be fully present beside another living being?

At Wildflower Soul Sanctuary, we are gently moving away from heavily structured activities and leaning deeper into connection-based experiences instead.

Reiki.

Sound healing.

Meditation.

Breathwork.

Quiet moments in the paddock.

The horses choosing to come closer.

The nervous system softening naturally.

Because sometimes healing isn’t loud.

Sometimes it looks like sitting beneath a tree while a horse quietly stands beside you.

Over time, I began hearing similar reflections from others:

“I walked in feeling overwhelmed and left feeling lighter than I have in months.”
“The horses made me feel seen without needing to explain myself.”
“For the first time in a long time, my mind became quiet.”
“I didn’t realise how much tension I was holding until it disappeared.”

And maybe that’s the beauty of this work.

You don’t need horse experience.

You don’t need to know anything about Reiki.

You don’t need to have the “right words.”

You simply arrive exactly as you are.

The horses meet you there.

The energy meets you there.

And slowly, gently, something begins to bloom.

Like wildflowers after rain.

An Invitation to Pause & Reconnect

Wildflower Soul Sanctuary was created as a space for women to breathe again.

To reconnect with themselves through nature, horses, energy healing, creativity, and calm.

A space where healing is not forced.

A space where connection matters more than performance.

A space where your nervous system can finally feel safe enough to soften.

Because sometimes the most powerful transformations happen quietly…beneath a tree, with a horse beside you, when your soul finally remembers what peace feels like.
